The slip resistance or anti-slip properties of floorings or road surfaces determines the safety for pedestrians, cyclists and fast-moving traffic. The determination of these characteristics is a complicated issue. TCKI has various measuring techniques to gain insight into this.

Ramp-Walking method.

A measuring technique that can only be implemented in the laboratory is the so-called ramp measurement method. A test walker determines the maximum incline angle at which the tester can still walk for a relevant floor material. There are various options: barefoot or with specific footwear and with soapy water or oil as contaminant. Tests are conducted according to DIN 51130, DIN 51097, EN 13451-1, EN 13845 and CEN/TS 16165.

Pendulum method.

A measurement technique that is used both in the laboratory or on site on a floor or on a road surface is the pendulum method (also called the SRT method). Here we measure the extent of overshoot of a rubber slider. This slider is attached to an pendulum arm. The surface characteristics of the material determines the extent of overshoot of the slider when moving the slider over the surface. There are two types of rubber that are used for this slider.

The test is usually performed with water as a contaminant. Fresh materials and products are sometimes additionally polished in order to evaluate the durability of the slip resistance of a product (the so-called PSRV is determined in addition to the USRV). The test is conducted in accordance with EN 1338, EN 1339, EN 1340, EN 1341, EN 1342, EN 1343, EN 1344, EN 13036-4, EN 14231, CEN/TS 15676, EN 14904, BS 7976- 1, 2 und 3 and CEN/TS 16165.

Dynamic coefficient of friction, pull slider-method.

A third measuring technique, which can be implemented both in the laboratory and on site on a floor or on a road material, determines the dynamic coefficient of friction. A GMG 200 apparatus is dragged over a certain length accross the surface that requires testing and measures the dynamic coefficient of friction over this length. Three rubber blocks or a combination of leather and rubber blocks, attached to the bottom of the measurement box, are dragged over the test surface in this process. Tests are conducted according to EN 13893, DIN 51131, EN 14041, NEN 7909 and CEN/TS 16165.

TCKI has the knowledge and experience to measure and evaluate slip resistance or anti-slip properties of flooring and road materials. Measurements can be conducted both in the laboratory and on site.
